  Melnik
  is just a short trip from Sandanski, 24 km away. Surrounded by sharp and ragged sandstone hills. There are several monasteries and a large fortress. Melnik has a reputation of quality wines.
  
  Rupite - Roughly 20 minutes drive away the tiny vilage of Rupite is the birth and burial place of Vanga, Bulgaria`s most famous clairvoyant. She is buried in a modern church there, which is covered in controversial fescoes by the contemporary Bulgarian artist Svetlin Rusev.  Whatever your opinion on ecclesiastical art, this is a fantastic place and really does have a spiritual feel to it.
  
  The final attraction in this region is the Rozhen Monastery. It`s dedicated to the Naivity of the Mother of God. Rozhen monastery can be reached by car. The views from here are spectacular. Originally built in 1217 it was rebuilt in the late 16th century - Rozhen is the only monastery restored during Ottoman rule to have survived to this day.
  There is a regular bus line coming from Sandanski to the village of Rozhen.
